Czech President: Multiculturalism is a Tragic Mistake
Paroubek dismisses multiculturalism as cause of terrorism

LUCANY NAD NISOU- Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek (CSSD) today dismissed the opinion of President Vaclav Klaus that multiculturalism is the fundamental cause of terrorism.
"Terrorists can fly in aboard planes, and it is really so in a majority of cases," Paroubek told journalists at his countryside cottage in the Jizerske Mountains.

Klaus said in interview for Saturday's issue daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) that multiculturalism is a tragic mistake of the current western civilisation for which all pay dear.

He said that it is not its direct, but fundamental cause, and he compared it to the role Marx's teaching played in the crimes of communism.

Klaus said at the same time that this is not to be an explanation of the recent attacks in London.

Paroubek said however that transport and information distances are completely different in the present-day globalised world than they were 100 years ago.

That is why terrorists can come from the ranks of immigrants, but this need not be so at all.

The excessive openness of the West to immigrants from other cultural environments facilitates attacks by radical Islamists at targets in western countries, Klaus said in MfD.

"This (the openness) is in any case a suitable soil for these things (attacks) to happen," Klaus said.

Paroubek did not say whether migration is good or not. He said however that migration is a fact. In Germany there are three million Turks and in France five million Muslims.

"What else should countries do with them than try to integrate them into society," he said.

Paroubek told journalists that his view of the world differs from Klaus's.

"I assure you that it is entirely different not only on this issue," he added.

Klaus and Paroubek disagreed recently for instance on Paroubek's plan to make an accommodating gesture towards Sudeten German antifascists.

Paroubek wants to meet Klaus to discuss the issue with him.

Paroubek and Klaus were also recently in a sharp dispute over the presentation of stands on the European constitution.

Paroubek then threatened that the government might restrict Klaus's foreign trips if he did not act in harmony with its instructions abroad.

Klaus is fully against the constitution while Paroubek and the government support it.

Police and far-right protesters fight running battles in Litvinov

Riot police in the northern Czech town of Litvinov have waged a bloody battle with far-right protesters trying to reach a Roma (Gypsy) suburb.
Police, some mounted on horses, tried to force back rioters from a 500-strong crowd with batons and tear gas as youths hurled petrol bombs and stones.
Seven demonstrators and seven police officers were injured in the clashes.
The violence broke out at a march by the far-right Workers' Party on Monday, a public holiday in the Czech Republic.
At least one injured policeman could be seen lying on the ground with blood on his face, and a police car was set alight.

About 1,000 police were deployed to control the marchers.
"The police tried to get the demonstrators back to the planned march route but they started throwing flaming bottles," said police spokeswoman Jarmila Hrubesova.
About 15 people were reportedly arrested.
The Czech Republic's largely impoverished Roma population has repeatedly complained of endemic racial discrimination. However, radical right-wingers like the Workers' Party have failed to make inroads in national politics over the past decade, analysts say.
