Immigration crisis by Mr C. Debono

From Mr C. Debono

Since my last contribution to this newspaper, another 250 have boosted the population of illegal immigrants. These are only the official figures. The true figures are being shamefully hidden from the public as certain media does not report new arrivals.

Minister Dolores Cristina is now talking of a crisis and is making contingency housing plans in case the immigrants start arriving in lots of 200. Does the minister or the government she represents realise that they are themselves precipitating the crisis? They are advertising housing plans to illegal immigrants still waiting to cross over. Immigrants who are already here will surely inform their relatives and friends what an accommodating government we have. Where does the minister intend to house the thousands who will make it this summer? Does she expect to turn our households into boarding homes for these people? That would certainly help fraternising, much better than a smile or an invitation to meet for a coffee.

I would like to remind the public that none of these illegal immigrants are being sent back. Government figures show that more than 50 per cent of applications for refugee status are being accepted. The rest are being given humanitarian protection – 100 per cent acceptance.

The government is now also talking of granting Maltese citizenship to those immigrants who have been here for more than 10 years. This really must be the irrational culmination of a servile government that is prepared to forfeit the rights of Maltese citizens. Not only do we have to support these people through our taxes while they occupy our land, but they will also have the right to cast their vote and decide the way we run our country. In time they will commute our laws in their favour as has happened in all democratic countries which these people have fled to.

By whose mandate is this government implementing the policy on illegal immigration? Certainly not by that section of Maltese society which voted it to power. This policy is not a law that can be revoked by another party in government. Doing so will create havoc. Such decisions should have national consensus achieved only through a referendum. The policy being implemented today will remain the legacy for all future generations.

What figure has to be reached before government says, “Enough. Malta cannot absorb any more illegal immigrants?” Everyone is aware of the limited resources of our country. Yet the only contingency plans are for opening more centres capable of accommodating hundreds of immigrants. The top echelons in government under the influence of foreign bodies and local ecclesiastics are determined to turn Malta into one huge refugee centre even if it means squeezing out the Maltese and re-creating another fifties emigration era.

Pathetic efforts by certain ecclesiastic individuals to integrate these people through ethnic festivals are having the opposite effect. We have nothing in common with these people. We are being encouraged to embrace a culture, the very culture that persecuted these people and made them flee their country. Nor will it be achieved by prosecuting liberal voices. This will only appease a small minority while the majority who has had enough, will be drawn to those voices, however extreme.

The archbishop has pleaded with the Maltese to accept these immigrants and help them integrate. May I remind him that these are no mere passers-by but are here to stay? Is he untroubled by the thought that intermingling with Muslims will constitute a danger to our faith. He should be, for the newly elected Pope has openly declared his opposition to Turkey joining the EU due to it being a Muslim country. So shall we call the Pope a racist? Apparently in Malta, only the Jehovah’s Witnesses constitute a spiritual danger to our religion.

I urge those Members of Parliament on both sides who still have the interest of the Maltese at heart to stand up to those who have hijacked this country and make them stop Malta’s headlong plunge into oblivion.
