VALLETTA, Malta (di-ve news)--September 07, 2005 -- 1620CEST--

A man from San Gwann was fined Lm200, after a court ruled out he acted in self-defence when he fired a gun.

A court was told that Jamie Caruana, 27 had meant to frighten a gang of men but not hurt them when fired the gun 'up the road' rather than at the gang.

On July 10, 2002, five men went to Caruana's house for an explanation for the sudden death of dog which was under his custody. The accused explained that the dog was given to him on the condition that it should be returned if Caruana was not able to take care of it. The dog died of natural causes. He said he was frightened and fired the gun to scare the men.

The court ruled out that Caruana acted in self-defence

Why Lm200? Do you have to be fined for defending yourself?
Imagine being in a state were one is unable to afford to defend himself!

Laws should be changed. we had enough of humans acting like animals. If someone comes in my house and treatens me I shoot him. I can go to jail, but at least i would have lived.

Maybe the pistol was unlicensed? Fined for keeping an unlicensed weapon?
