GHAR LAPSI, Malta (di-ve news)--June 22, 2005 -- 2010CEST--Around 1430CEST, the police were informed that a number of illegal immigrants had made it to the shore at Ghar Lapsi Bay.
The police went immediately on site wherein they found 28 illegal immigrants 4 of whom were women. The immigrants stated that 3 of them came from Sudan while the rest came from Somalia.
In a separate case, Armed Forces of Malta assets were searching for another boat reported in a position approximately 8 nautical miles south of Delimara.
Despite the severely limited visibility, AFM assets successfully intercepted this latter boat around 1830 CEST. Its 20 occupants, consisting of 19 males and 1 female were safely conveyed to shore at Haywharf and are currently under police investigations.
Three of the immigrants said they came from Ethiopia, 16 said they came from Somalia whilst the other said that he came from Sudan.
Both cases are being investigated by the Immigration Police.
Maritime and air assets of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) have since Tuesday been deployed on various searches for boats with irregular migrants. Several reports were received that various boats were proceeding in a Northerly direction presumably after having left the North African coast. Ergo.
