Almost 3,600 irregular immigrants arrived in Malta between 2002 and 2004

Figures issued on Monday, to mark the International Refugee Day, showed that 53 per cent of asylum applications were granted refugee or humanitarian protection status. Thus, Malta emerged as the country with the highest acceptance rate in Europe.
The year 2004 marked the largest number of applicants reaching the Office of the Refugee Commissioner, that is, 994 applications.
During the first five months of 2005, the office of the Refugee Commissioner have received 494 application and almost 70 per cent of them were granted refugee or humanitarian protection status.
Over a longer time span between January 2002 and May 2005 almost 90 per cent of the grants were given as humanitarian protection.
In 2004, 84 per cent of the NGOs workforce involved in providing aid to refugees consisted of volunteers, the majority of which were women.
The NGOs are working at a loss. In 2004, the expenditure exceeded income by 15 per cent.
