VALLETTA, Malta (di-ve news)--June 20, 2005 -- 1140CEST--Asylum seekers in Malta are being denied justice, a human rights group has said. They are being held in detention centres on grounds beyond those permissible under international norms, Amnesty International warned.
In a report published on Monday to mark the International Refugee Day, Amnesty International said that the length of detention was "unreasonable".
They said that in February 2004, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern about the policy of automatic detention until the conclusion of refugee determination proceedings or return to country of region.
In its report, the Refugee Action Group referred to the incidents at Safi detention centre last January when members of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) had subjected scores of asylum-seekers and unauthorised migrants to physical assault resulting in numerous injuries.
On Sunday, government denied the contents of an article carried in a local newspaper which claimed that a report published by the Council of Europe had found the government guilty of torturing irregular immigrants landing in Malta.
The government said that it was addressing the problem on various fronts in a bid to reduce the impact that this has on the country.
It said that a task force had been set up to prepare a national strategy on this problem, which is affecting other countries which are stronger and larger and which have more resources than Malta.
