New European identity would help stem racism

European haste in forging ahead with economic and political union without creating a new European identity is fuelling racism in the region, a United Nations expert said.

"Europe... has suddenly realised they are constructing a political union on the basis of an identity built centuries ago based on Christianity and certain types of ethnic features," said the UN Rapporteur on Racism and Xenophobia, Doudou Diene.

While Mr Diene praised as "positive" the move toward political union in the European Union, he said its member states had not done enough to recognise diversity as an essential part of Europe's identity.

"This diversity of ethnicity, culture and religion in Europe is not reflected in the national identities of European countries," he told Reuters.

"That is the fundamental argument being used not only by xenophobic parties but even by democratic parties."

Anti-immigrant rhetoric in last month's French referendum in which voters rejected the EU constitution showed mainstream parties adopting extremist views, Mr Diene said.

"Democratic political parties are increasingly influenced by extreme right parties through the guise of combating illegal immigration, through the defence of national interests."

Asked if he believed the swift pace of European integration had increased racism, Mr Diene replied: "Yes, I believe that very strongly.

"It is urgent that in the identity building of Europe, the multi-cultural and multiethnicity of Europe, be given the same priority as the political and economic dimension."

The September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States by radical Muslims linked to al Qaeda prompted many European countries to sideline civil liberties and close their doors to asylum seekers creating a "Fortress Europe", Mr Diene said

When we learned of the presence of UN Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) Rapporteur on Racism, Mr. Doudou Diène, among the otherwise excellent speakers selected for the program, we advised the organizers of our serious reservations.

Our Center, on 25 March 2003, requested the UNHRC Chair to withdraw Mr. Doudou Diène's reports due to their lack of equilibrium and even denial. His well-documented 57-paragraph report on Islamophobia (E/CN.4/2003/23 "Situation Of Muslim And Arab Peoples In Various Parts Of The World In The Aftermath Of The Events Of 11 September 2001") was accompanied by a 40 paragraph counterpart on other forms of racism (E/CN.4/2003/24 "Contemporary Forms Of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia And Intolerance"). This contained only one paragraph (n° 39), which states that he had "received from the Government of Israel and from several Jewish NGOs allegations of the large-scale distribution in the Middle East and in Europe of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion... the document apparently appeared... In one Middle Eastern country, a private television channel has allegedly produced and shown the Protocols" ...AND NOTHING MORE!

It should be noted that this Rapporteur is a central figure in the UN apparatus for the implementation of the Program and Plan of Action of the blatantly antisemitic Durban Conference on Racism of 2001.

More damaging, Doudou Diène, on 11-14 November 2004, led a meeting in Barcelona entitled "Experts' Seminar on Defamation of Religions and the Global Struggle Against Discrimination: Antisemitism, Christianophobia and Islamophobia," organized by the UNESCO Center of Catalunya, but incorrectly presented as under the auspices of UNESCO. This gathering keynoted speakers who are notoriously celebrated for championing the replacement of Israel by a State of Palestine and the seminar's conclusions highlighted "the legitimacy of anti-Zionism."

Thanks for publishing the Doudou's pic, Argo. I was wondering what sort of diet this character lives on. I mean with a very tribal 1st name and an French second, I wasn't quite sure.

Anyway what would you expect an African wannabe to say? The guy lives off a 6 figure salary paid by the Western states, occassionally visits the rest of the no-hopers in Africa and probably teaches them that just being in Europe and/or the West makes you rich by default.

When the blacks take over in Europe and the whites' efforts will not be enough to support the sprawling black millions squatting on the continent, Europe will descend into choas and poverty similar to what Africa in the hands of the blacks is going through today. By that time most of the true Europeans would have emigrated to Australia, New Zealand and other new pastures, until it will be time again for the Africans to try infiltrating there as well.

Why don't the Africans just get their act together and do something right in their own mineral-rich continent? That's where Doudou should expend his eloquence, convincing his fellow natives that there is no gain without pain and that money doesn't grow on trees in Europe...and he should spend less time giving out these idiotic interviews in 5 star European hotels on company account.
