Gzira: An Oasis For Refugees
As a resident of this town for 4 consecutive years I’m personally going to speak out of my own personal opinions. For those who live in Gzira, they also know about the common ‘guest’ in this town – The Clandestine.
I myself have seen of the small motels set up around this town for these people to live in, almost every day, seeing half a dozen arrive, getting of the bus with garbage bags with their personal items, to live a life of “everything-free-for-the-price-of-none”.
I myself have seen how The Strand (The Sliema-Gzira Front) has become theirs, how they all slouch on the benches, leaving hardly any space for the Innocent Maltese to sit on. I have seen them sitting on the hard cold stone because all these refugees occupy almost every bench during night-time. I have seen the set-up of many Internet Café’s for these refugees on the Strand and in Gzira itself so they can communicate with their friends back home so they can come here and leech off from our hard-earned pay.
I have witnessed myself, how even sometimes, kiosk owners on The Strand actually offer them a free soft-drink or perhaps a hot-dog on the house, When wether they know it or not, their hard-earned pay will partially contribute to these do-gooders.
Mothers must have Eagle-Eyes to walk the streets of Gzira when their children are tagging along with them, since Gzira has become a mob-town. Every night, groups of 7 and 8, in almost every street.
Seeing them Enter the Health-Centre in Gzira (Polyclinic) and being the first in line because they are “emergency-patients” has become a normal routine.
This is what Gzira has become, from a peaceful residential area. It has turned into an oasis for Welfare cheques, and Free Services for unwanted guests. We’ll soon be hearing of hearing gang-wars between Moroccans and Libyans in Gzira before Minister Dolores Christina can congratulate them. The Government School here In Gzira has dozens of its students, offspring to Refugee Parents, The Government really wouldn’t mind since it’s a beacon for Multi-Culturalism. Dolores will soon ban all Maltese Students and replace them with the un-educated refugees since she pities them oh so much. The only thing left for Gzira is to be renamed into ‘Little Libya’.
I myself have been a victim of these nocturnal-gangs, Passing through my own streets and hearing them whisper from a dark corner, or walking from behind hardly 3 paces away from me on purpose, to ridicule and frighten the resident from walking his own streets.
Rather than wasting resources, time and money on these people, The Local Council should see as how to limit these people living in Gzira, or perhaps how to move them somewhere else, and resume to a Local Council’s true aims, To Help the Resident and see how his/her stay can be a PEACEFUL one when living in his/her town.
